Embankment fire in the ski area: 9-year-old sets off fireworks!
On December 21, 2025, at 2:25 p.m. there was an embankment fire in the Fügenberg ski area, below the “Onkeljochbahn”, which was probably caused by a firecracker thrown by a 9-year-old boy. The boy had thrown the F1 category firecracker from the chairlift. The fire covered an area of around 100 m² and was extinguished by the fire brigade by 4:20 p.m. The fire department then reported a “fire.” Fortunately, there were no injuries, although the amount of damage cannot yet be quantified. A total of around 50 emergency services from the Fügen volunteer fire department with five vehicles, four flight assistants from the Schwaz fire department, the crew of the Libelle Tirol and a police patrol were on site.
The cause of the fire, which was caused by the fireworks, raises questions about the safe handling of pyrotechnic products. Children and young people are fascinated by fireworks, but minors are only allowed to purchase and light small fireworks. They are often not aware of the legal regulations and safety precautions or do not comply with them. Incidents like this highlight the need for education about the responsible use of fireworks.
Important safety aspects
Teaching materials on the subject of fireworks, such as those provided by dguv-lug.de, not only address safety aspects, but also the chemical and physical background of fireworks production. Skills that students can acquire include working together to develop safety rules and researching the causes of accidents involving fireworks.
These offerings are particularly important to raise awareness about the dangers and proper handling of fireworks. Many underage users may not be aware of the risks that can come with setting off fireworks. Such educational units are particularly recommended before the Christmas holidays and can be supplemented by practical experiments in chemistry lessons.
The incident in Fügenberg is an urgent appeal to the importance of safety precautions when dealing with fireworks and the need to inform young people about the applicable rules in a timely manner. It remains to be seen what measures will be taken after this fire to prevent similar incidents in the future.
For further information on the safe use of fireworks, we recommend the detailed materials available in schools, as well as the reports from fireworld.at and radiograz.at.
