Stonehenge: A 5,000-year-old symbol of British unity discovered!

Scientists may have unlocked the secrets of Stonehenge with a new study. As the DailyMail reports, the impressive monument, which was built around 5,000 years ago in the United Kingdom, was built as a symbol of the unification of three parts of Britain. Research by experts at University College London and the University of Aberystwyth shows that the stones at Stonehenge not only come from the region, but were also imported from southwest Wales and northeast Scotland. It is thought that the Welsh and Scots transported their own stones to Wiltshire to contribute to this monumental structure.

The findings suggest that Stonehenge could be seen as an early sign of British unity, with the monument intended to "create political unity and a common identity for much or even all of Britain," according to the authors of the article published in Archeology International. Researchers further suggest that Stonehenge was built between 2620 and 2480 BC. It was reconstructed when newcomers from Europe settled in the region. These findings suggest that Neolithic people moved an impressive 6-ton stones over 700 kilometers to build Stonehenge.

A visit to Stonehenge

As well as being a fascinating monument, Stonehenge is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with surrounding remains of ceremonial and residential structures, some of which are older than the monument itself, as highlighted on the Visit Wiltshire website. The impressive alignment of the stone circle with the rising and setting path of the sun could indicate a cultic worship of the sun or great astronomical significance, but remains an unsolved mystery. Visitors can go to the Stonehenge Visitor Center, which features comprehensive exhibitions about the history and significance of Stonehenge, many from nearby museums. An unforgettable experience, the audio tours are available in multiple languages, including German, to give visitors a deeper understanding of this incredible monument.
