Nuclear storage facility near Waldshut: Swiss plan causes excitement!

At an explosive information evening in Waldshut, around 300 citizens from the region learned that a deep geological repository for nuclear waste is planned just a few kilometers from the German border. The event took place on Monday and brought together representatives of the Swiss National Cooperative for Nuclear Waste (Nagra) with concerned residents, particularly from the municipality of Hohentengen, which is only about three kilometers from the planned “Nördlich Lägern” site in the canton of Zurich. The site had been considered inadequate several years ago, but has now been declared the safest for long-term storage of radioactive waste, surprising many Germans as the original plans favored other sites. Loud Nagra The reason for the location was not political, but purely geological.

Scope and decision-making processes

Nagra has now submitted a comprehensive general license application that includes 30,000 pages and deals with the safety-relevant aspects and the transport routes to the final repository. According to calculations, Switzerland will generate around 83,000 cubic meters of radioactive waste by 2075, which is equivalent to the size of around 33 Olympic swimming pools. German experts consider Nagra's arguments to be plausible and thus support the view that the storage facility in “Nördlich Lägern” meets the highest long-term safety standards. A public debate and a referendum on the project are planned from 2031, while the final decision on the application is expected to be made by 2029 daily news reported.

It is planned that the storage of nuclear waste will begin in 2050 at the earliest, with the year 2060 being targeted for highly radioactive waste. The deep repository is not scheduled to be finally closed until 2125. In the coming months, the documents will be checked by the Swiss authorities for completeness, while a discussion about the security aspects of the project is already being initiated.
