Meta strikes back: AI disinformation has little influence on elections!
The world breathes up! Despite the global fears of the devastating effects of artificial intelligence (AI) on the 2024 elections, the technology giant Meta, known for its platforms Facebook, Instagram and threads, announced that the influence was minimal! Meta President Nick Clegg said that their defense measures were successful and AI-controlled disinformation campaigns could not gain a foothold.
In a year, in which an estimated 2 billion people took part in elections in numerous countries, Meta only discovered a modest influence of AI. CLEGG emphasized that most of the stopped influence operations came from actors from Russia, Iran and China. A total of around 20 such operations were prevented on meta platforms this year. Russia was particularly active, with 39 disturbed networks since 2017. CLEGG found that the amount of AI generated misinformation was low and was quickly marked or removed.
disinformation in sight
In the weeks before the elections, Meta rejected 590,000 inquiries to create pictures of prominent political figures. CLEGG explained that the fears about the effects of generative AI were exaggerated on the elections. "Every such impact was modest and limited," he said. While AI content such as Deepfake videos were quickly exposed, CLEGG warned that disinformation on other social media, especially TikKok, has increased.
public concerns are not unfounded: A survey showed that almost eight times as many Americans expected Ki to be used for negative purposes in the 2024 election, compared to those who believed in positive applications. Meta is still under pressure because the allegations of censorship and disregard for user rights are in the room. CLEGG admitted that the company might be rigoros when removing content and promised to improve the accuracy of its measures.
