Cheese theft in London: £ 300,000 of valuable cheddar disappeared!
Southwark, London, UK - An incredible cheese theft has shaken the British gourmet scene! Neal’s Yard Dairy, a respected cheese distributor from London's Borough Market, was cheated by a whopping £ 300,000 (almost $ 390,000) on award -winning, manual cheddar. On October 21, the Metropolitan Police reported the theft of a huge amount of cheese from a manufacturer in Southwark. The investigation is in full swing!
The stolen types of cheeses, including the famous WestCombe Cheddar and Hafod Welsh Organic Cheddar, are not only delicious, but also extremely valuable - up to £ 45 ($ 58) per kilogram! Neal’s Yard Dairy explained that the high monetary value of these types of cheeses made them a special goal for the thieves. The message has gourmet and celebrities like Jamie Oliver, who spread the customer of the "big cheese robbery" via Instagram, in turmoil.
The sophisticated plan of the fraudsters
How could this huge cheese theft come about? A skillful fraudster was an agent of a respected French cheese dealer who is known for his large cheese events in Europe. With a sophisticated contract and extensive knowledge of the industry, he managed to outsmart Neal’s Yard Dairy and withdraw 950 Cheddar bikes with a total weight of 24 tons. Patrick Holden, owner of the Hafod cheese arm, reported that the thieves requested the delivery to another camp in London, from where the cheese then disappeared.
Where the cheese is now remains uncertain. Holden suspects that the thieves could try to sell it in the Middle East or in Russia. Neal’s Yard Dairy asked the other cheese distributors to report suspicious 10- and 24-kilogram bikes without labels, as this could indicate an illegal sale. The investigation continues and no arrests have been made yet. Neal’s Yard Dairy, however, assured that the cheemakers concerned will not remain at their expense.
