Protests in Georgia escalate: water cannons against angry demonstrators!

In Georgia, the pro-European protests escalate, which take place in the capital of Tbilisi and in the coastal city of Batumi. Tens of thousands of people have gathered to demonstrate against the postponement of EU accession negotiations by Prime Minister Irakli Kobachidse. In these nightly riots, the security forces use water cannons to drive away the demonstrating masses. While the protesters partially fired on the parliament with fireworks, Kleine Zeitung and Poland caused sharp criticism.

violence and arrests

The protests are a reaction to the repressive measures of the Georgian government, which has been passed by laws among other things that arouse concern in Brussels. After the security forces made the demonstrators with tear gas and trimmings, many detainees reported abuse during their detention. The human rights officer Lewan Iosseliani was concerned about the excessive violence that was applied against the demonstrators. A policeman was injured and a total of 260 people were arrested, whereby 188 of them reported abuse, such as documented.

In addition, two prominent opposition politicians were taken into custody; Aleko Elissaschwili received a two -month pre -trial detention and Nika Gwaramija was orderly convicted for twelve days. Prime Minister Kobachidse praised the security forces for their "successes" in dealing with the "violence of the demonstrators", while President Salome Surabischwili described the authorities' actions as "terror against the demonstrators". The government's brutal reaction has triggered internationally, and concern is growing over the future of Georgia in the geopolitical arena, especially with regard to the failed EU accession process.
