Accident statistics and their relevance
Road accidents like the one that happened are a serious problem in Europe and result in thousands of injuries and deaths every year. According to Europarl, for example, 22,800 people lost their lives in traffic accidents in the EU in 2019. The number of road traffic deaths fell by 36 percent between 2010 and 2020, but accidental deaths remain a pressing issue, especially on heavily used traffic routes.
In Austria, as in the rest of Europe, such accidents shape safety statistics. It appears that young adults, particularly those between the ages of 18 and 24, are disproportionately affected, even though they only represent a small portion of the total population. Continued attention to road safety remains essential in order to further reduce the number of accidents and satisfy the protection needs of all road users.
