Putin opposes ceasefire: Peace only under conditions!”

Russian President Vladimir Putin has now personally commented on the US push for a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine. According to a report by krone.at, Russia recognizes the need for a ceasefire, but only on the condition that root causes of the war are eliminated and a basis for “long-term peace” is created. The Russian head of state said this after a meeting with his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko. In addition, both presidents have accused NATO and the EU of “hostilities,” suggesting that Moscow feels under pressure and sees Western interference as a threat.

Ukraine agreed to the ceasefire proposal on March 12, 2025. But now it is up to the Kremlin to react. ZDF correspondent Armin Coerper reports that Russia's reaction is still pending as it waits for the Americans to deliver the details in person. While Ukraine continues to hope for a commitment from Russia, there are reports of serious doubts in the Kremlin about a quick approval. According to Coerper, Russia could be timing the situation in the east, especially since its own troops are advancing in the Kursk region.

Putin demands conditions

Putin made it clear that the issue of Ukrainian troops in the Kursk region needed to be resolved before a ceasefire could come into force. While the Kremlin has been making demands for a solution for some time, it remains to be seen whether these can be met through appropriate negotiations with the USA. US special envoy Steve Witkoff is expected in the Kremlin to discuss “many questions”.

The US is also pushing for a cessation of fighting, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky calling the ceasefire a positive step. He hopes that the US will convince Moscow to agree to the proposal, which is being followed with excitement internationally. These developments could be crucial for the continuation of the military conflicts that have characterized Ukraine for almost three years.
