Poland elects Nawrocki: Tusk threatens political blockade!
On June 10, 2025, Poland will face political upheaval. The presidential election on June 1 brought the independent historian Karol Nawrocki to power, who narrowly won against the liberal Rafal Trzaskowski. This outcome is seen not only as a defeat for Trzaskowski, but also for the current head of government, Donald Tusk, who has led a center-left coalition of three parties since the end of 2023. Nawrocki, known as a right-wing nationalist, has already announced that he will vehemently fight Tusk's pro-European government coalition.
Nawrocki's votes were a clear statement in a political climate that is increasingly characterized by tensions. The elections and the successful build-up of supporters under the leadership of PiS leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski have put Nawrocki in a position where he can have significant influence on the coming legislative period. His inauguration is scheduled for August 6, 2025 and is eagerly awaited.
Conflicts and resistance
The prospects for a harmonious collaboration between Tusk and Nawrocki seem bleak. Nawrocki has openly announced opposition to the reforms sought by Tusk, which aim to repair the damage caused to the rule of law by the previous PiS government between 2015 and 2023. Key bills proposed by Tusk's government have been repeatedly blocked in the past by Tusk's predecessor, President Andrzej Duda. It is therefore likely that Nawrocki will continue this course and could thus significantly hinder Tusk's plans.
The upcoming confidence vote in parliament on June 11 could increase immediate pressure on Tusk's coalition. Tusk not only faces the challenge of defending his course in domestic politics, but also has to assert himself against Nawrocki's accusations that mark him as the “worst head of government Poland has had since 1989”. Nawrocki even demands that Tusk be replaced if his coalition is to continue to exist.
European consequences and international reactions
Nawrocki's election is seen as a landmark for Poland and Europe. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expresses concern about the possible consequences of his victory and calls for cooperation to ensure peace and prosperity in Europe. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, however, congratulated Nawrocki and called the victory “fantastic.” This political shift could lead to Nawrocki blocking pro-European initiatives, which would be another sign of the growing influence of right-wing nationalist forces in the EU.
Nawrocki signaled early on that he would also veto any possible NATO membership for Ukraine, which could fuel further international diplomatic tensions. In this way, the Europe of the political center is under pressure from right-wing populists and autocratic leaders. The entire political landscape is in jeopardy and will make it difficult for both Tusk and Nawrocki to form stable alliances in the political space.
