Munich under the sign of security: Vance and Trump face big decisions!
The Munich Security Conference (MSC) brings together leading politicians and diplomats from Friday to Sunday to address the current geopolitical situation, particularly in the Ukraine conflict and in the Middle East. Among the participating heads of state and government are Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and numerous other important state representatives. The expected speech by US Vice President J.D. Vance is particularly in focus as he will address the negotiations to end the Ukraine war, such as OE24 reported.
He announced that he wanted to emphasize NATO's role in the future and would not rule out the need for "military pressure" to conduct negotiations. At the same time, US President Donald Trump and Vance held talks with Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin and Zelensky in order to create a new negotiating dynamic without directly involving the EU. Trump informed that such talks will take place within the framework of the MSC, with high-ranking representatives from Russia, Ukraine and the USA taking part, such as Mirror communicates.
Planned conversations and challenges
Before the start of the conference, there appears to be movement in the search for peace, but there is skepticism about Ukraine's role in the emerging negotiations. Dmytro Lytwyn, an adviser to Zelensky, said that a common position from the US, EU and Ukraine was needed before talks with Russia. Christoph Heusgen, Chairman of the MSC, confirmed that Russian government officials are not accredited, underlining the clarity and transparency of the conference.
Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has to reschedule his plane to Munich due to technical problems and is also expected to meet Zelensky before traveling further to the Middle East. Interim Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg of Austria will also attend the MSC and plans to demand a “clear response” from Europeans to US positions to strengthen European unity and support for Ukraine.
