Meloni in the legal dispute: Italy fights against migration and judiciary!
Italy faces dramatic changes in transport policy and in dealing with migration. In order to reduce the alarming number of more than 3,000 traffic fatalities per year, the government under Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has introduced new, strict traffic rules. These contain drastic punishments for drivers who make calls while driving. Austria recorded 396 traffic fatalities last year, which underlines the seriousness of the situation, as the Kleine Zeitung reported.
At the same time, an Italian court decided that the outsourcing of asylum procedures to Albania is illegal. The Meloni government's project planned to accommodate asylum seekers in need of protection in order to significantly restrict the irregular migration. After migrants, including citizens from Egypt and Bangladesh, had to be brought back to Italy, the asylum centers in Albania remain empty. Meloni critically commented on the judicial decisions by attacking the judiciary and spoke of a conspiracy, according to the report of ZDF .
Legal government in the twist with the judiciary
The dispute over migration has escalated with the latest decree of the government, which defines 19 countries, including Egypt and Bangladesh, as safe countries of origin. The opposition provides a dangerous step towards undermining the separation of powers and accuses Meloni of wanting to reform the Italian judiciary in order to strengthen its own political power. These developments could not only burden the internal stability of Italy, but also the relationship with European institutions, since many of these countries that are considered safe are classified by the EU as insecure.
The continuing conflicts within the Italian government and with the judiciary throw a shadow on the already tense political conditions in Italy. It remains to be seen how the new legislation is accepted both in Germany and at EU level and what consequences it will have for the Italian road network and migration policy.
