Battle for Ukraine: Help or Resistance in the EU?
The discussion about increasing military aid to Ukraine has gained momentum, with the position of the southern European states in particular being questioned. Loud Small newspaper Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani shows concerns about financing additional defense spending and expresses the need to also increase its own defense spending. In addition, his Spanish colleague explained that Spain had already pledged billions in military aid without waiting for proposals from the EU, thereby increasing the pressure on other EU states to act more quickly.
A crucial meeting of EU foreign ministers took place in Brussels on Tuesday, where a proposal to double military aid to Ukraine to 20 billion euros was discussed. The northern and eastern European countries support this proposal, but the rejection or reluctance of the southern European countries highlights the different security interests within the EU. In particular, countries that are geographically closer to Russia are more sensitive to these developments Mirror reported. Ireland and Malta, for example, have not yet committed to the expenditure now required.
The debates therefore shed light not only on geopolitical tensions, but also on the real financial and political challenges facing EU states, which must find a unified line with regard to military support for Ukraine. Austria's new Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger took part in this meeting for the first time and could build a bridge between the different positions within the Union.
