Horror accident near Lindau: Six injured and one in critical condition!

On April 18, 2025, there was a tragic traffic accident on the B31 near Lindau when a 32-year-old driver with a Vorarlberg license plate crashed head-on into a family car. The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. between the Sigmarszell junction and the Weißensberg exit. A total of six people were injured in the crash, including a 15-year-old teenager who had to be resuscitated. The injured were taken to clinics in Feldkirch, Friedrichshafen and Lindau. The condition of those affected is serious and the exact circumstances of the accident are still unclear.

The safety precautions in the family vehicle could possibly have prevented worse consequences, as the passengers in the back seat were unsecured. During the rescue effort, three rescue helicopters, including the Austrian “Gallus”, and an emergency medical vehicle from Vorarlberg were used. The fire department was also on site with around 70 emergency services to carry out technical rescue and initial medical care.

Cause of accident and investigation

The Kempten public prosecutor's office has commissioned an expert to determine the cause of the accident. Preliminary information suggests that the 32-year-old driver crossed into the oncoming lane, which led to the serious collision. The B31 had to be closed in both directions for four hours, causing significant traffic delays.

What is remarkable is the popularity of the volunteers who were active on site in supporting roles and offered professional follow-up care for those affected. The fire department also set up a privacy screen to prevent unauthorized photography by onlookers. Such tragic accidents are not uncommon in the region and a review of road accident statistics in the EU shows that road fatalities remain worryingly high in many countries.

Road safety statistics

According to current statistics, road accidents are one of the leading causes of injuries and deaths in the EU. There were 22,800 traffic fatalities in 2019, which represents a significant decrease compared to previous years. Between 2010 and 2020, the number of road deaths in Europe fell by 36 percent. Despite this positive development, the danger in road traffic remains a serious issue, particularly for certain age groups.

The risk of accidents remains high for young people between 18 and 24 years old, with 12 percent of road deaths recorded in this group, despite only making up 8 percent of the population. This demographic data highlights the importance of additional road safety measures to prevent such tragic accidents.

The events on the B31 near Lindau are another tragic reminder that safety on the roads should have top priority.
