FPÖ leader Vilimsky: EU attacks Hungary – sovereignty threatened!
Today, May 27, 2025, the meeting of the Council of the European Union will be marked by intensive discussions about the political attacks on Hungary. Harald Vilimsky, the head of the FPÖ delegation in the European Parliament, has sharply criticized the EU. He accuses the Union of interfering in Hungary's democratic processes and demands respect for the decision of the Hungarian voters. According to Vilimsky, the Hungarian people elected their president whose course for national sovereignty they support. He emphasizes that it is not the EU's job to override such decisions and describes the Union as a self-appointed values police with no mandate to judge national beliefs. OTS reports.
Vilimsky expects today's Council meeting to be a clear sign of respect for Hungary's national decisions. He criticizes the double standards because the EU preaches tolerance and diversity but does not recognize patriotic and traditional values. He describes this pressure on member states with different positions as a threat to European democracy.
EU and Hungary: A swelling area of conflict
This discussion takes place against the background of a resolution from the European Parliament. On Thursday, MEPs voted by 345 in favor, 104 against and 29 abstentions in favor of a resolution concerned about the erosion of democracy and the deterioration of the rule of law in Hungary. The “package to protect national sovereignty”, which has parallels to Russian laws, is also criticized. Parliament expressed regret at the lack of progress in the Article 7 TEU procedure, which was initiated back in 2018 Europarl reports.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is also condemned for blocking the revision of the multiannual financial framework. The European Council is asked to carry out a review to determine whether there are serious breaches of EU values in Hungary.
In the past, Hungary has already blocked €9 billion in EU financial aid intended for Ukraine, and around €30 billion in EU funds are currently frozen due to violations of the rule of law.
The Hungarian government under pressure
Since the early 2010s, Hungary has deviated from EU principles, particularly in migration policy and the use of EU funds. Orbán's government has severely restricted the independence of the judiciary and media freedom. Despite multiple infringement proceedings, including over an anti-LGBTQ+ law and criticized migration policies, EU membership remains crucial for Hungary. This is also reflected in the conviction of the majority of Hungarian citizens, who rate membership positively despite the critical situation TDCenter reports.
The EU is under great pressure because of Hungary, as the Hungarian government has used its veto power in numerous cases to block important decisions. The EU is heavily dependent on financial incentives to Hungary, which makes a fundamental review of relations with this member state appear necessary. How the conflict will continue in the coming months and possibly years remains to be seen, as both the EU and the Hungarian government find themselves in a precarious position.
