Discover the biodiversity: City Garden Days in Vienna!
The Vienna City Gardens invite you to the “Days of Biodiversity” in the Hirschstetten Flower Gardens on May 24th and 25th, 2025. The event takes place from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and addresses the important role of biodiversity in urban spaces. Numerous information and participation activities are available under the annual theme “Tree” with the motto “Crowned Roots”. The aim is to raise awareness of the need to protect biodiversity and provide expert opinions.
Biodiversity Days will feature various activities, including guided tours, on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at 3 p.m. and Sunday, May 25, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. Participants can gain insight into plant protection and tree safety, while children can take part in interactive activities including microscopes to observe flora and fauna and a tree memory. In addition, several stations provide information about different types of trees on the site.
Green spaces and urban biodiversity
According to a study on the role of urban gardens, the decline in natural habitats in cities is increasingly being offset by the design of green spaces and gardens. These gardens not only promote biodiversity but also provide habitats for endangered species. Native plants are crucial because they adapt to local conditions and provide food sources for insects such as bees and butterflies.
A Vienna climate tour is offered for the Days of Biodiversity, which provides information about green spaces, biodiversity and energy. Visitors have the opportunity to use cargo bikes to explore some of the stations that specifically focus on the topics of “green space”, “water” and “energy”. A “mushroom wheel” is also available to illustrate the importance of mushrooms in the ecosystem.
Arrival and further information
The Hirschstetten flower gardens are easily accessible both by public transport and by car. The south entrance can be reached via Quadenstrasse 15 (bus line 95A/B), while the west entrance is on Spargelfeldstrasse opposite number 75 (tram line 26). Visitors can also access the site from the north entrance on Oberfeldgasse opposite number 41 (tram line 26). Note: Dogs are not allowed on the entire site, with the exception of assistance dogs.
The commitment to nature conservation and the promotion of urban biodiversity is not only local, but also of overarching importance. The integration of biodiversity-promoting measures into urban planning is constantly being pushed forward. The benefits of urban gardens are diverse: They not only provide food and living space, but also strengthen social interaction among city residents.
