The end of an era: the last real Salzburg Mozartkugel rolls off the production line!
The factory site in Grödig has produced its last golden Mozartkugel. After 127 years of operation, the traditional Mirabell location, which slipped into bankruptcy in 2021, is now finally closed. On December 5th, the production of confectionery, including the famous Salzburg Mozartkugeln, will stop. The remaining 65 employees have to adapt to the closure, which was decided due to rising costs for raw materials, energy and packaging, as announced by Today.at reported.
KEX Group, which emerged as a potential rescuer in 2022, will sell the machinery and land to settle creditor claims. The traditional company, which has been based in Salzburg since 1948, has announced that the “Real Salzburger Mozartkugeln” will no longer have anything to do with the region. The Mondelēz brand owners have already found solutions for future production in other European countries such as Poland and the Czech Republic, as well Pulse24 reported.
fate of the employees
The closure comes as no surprise to employees. As early as December 2022, parts of production were stopped and 25 employees registered for termination. Management explained that long-term continuation of production was economically impossible. The last Mozartkugel will leave the production line on December 5th, after which the factory will be closed for an indefinite period of time with no prospective buyers yet.
The fate of the iconic candy is uncertain as Mondelēz holds the rights to the legendary Mozartkugeln. Plans for production abroad could push the Italian tradition into the background, worrying lovers of this Austrian classic. So moving production abroad could soon become a reality as the eastern Austrian city of Salzburg faces painful change.
