Vienna is fighting against speeders: New cameras and radar boxes in use!

The city of Vienna takes the fight against illegal street racing seriously! This year, 20 new surveillance cameras and five radar boxes are to be installed in order to step up action against the so-called roadrunner scene, which has repeatedly caused injuries and even deaths in recent years. State Transport Councilor Ulli Sima (SPÖ) is also calling for uniform rules across the country to punish speeders more harshly. Germany already has strict laws that allow for a prison sentence of up to two years for taking part in illegal street racing, and Sima wants to enforce similar measures in Austria, too wien.orf.at reported.

To support this project, up to 40 traffic cameras and 20 radar boxes are to be purchased for up to three million euros in the coming years. A corresponding decision by the Mobility Committee of the Vienna City Council is imminent. These new devices will help the Vienna police improve control in the city's hotspots in order to pursue lawbreakers more effectively. According to a joint statement from the city of Vienna and the state police, this is “another central component in the fight against the roadrunner scene in Vienna,” according to a report by derStandard.at mentioned.

The plans to improve road safety also include structural measures and an increased police presence, especially at night, in order to address the problem of illegal street racing. Sima further emphasizes that the confiscation and possible auction of speeding cars can already be implemented in extreme cases, but more consequences for the participants are required. In doing so, she wants to increase the pressure on speeders and sustainably improve safety on Vienna's streets.
