VW crisis meets Austria's auto industry: 6,300 jobs in danger!

The crisis at Volkswagen leads to massive consequences: In Austria, around 6,300 jobs are affected by the orders of the German car manufacturer, as current studies show. The companies concerned are mainly distributed via the automotive cluster in Upper Austria and Styria. The study created by ASCII, logistics of the University of Applied Sciences OÖ and the Complexity Science Hub, emphasizes that component manufacturers will suffer at short notice, while machine suppliers are more likely to expect long -term losses. The Austrian auto industry generates 28.5 billion euros , with impressive 85 percent exported by these products, of which 65 percent to Germany.

On the other hand, the results of a Deloitte-studie that many medium-sized and family companies were able to demonstrate their resilience in the middle of the covid-19-pandemy. These companies use the crisis as a catalyst to accelerate their transformation. While 69 percent of the respondents reported this, special focuses on digital transformation and the strengthening of supply chains were placed in Germany.

It is gratifying that only 9 percent of the companies are planning a job cuts, while 14 percent want to hire new employees. 38 percent of companies intend to increase their investments, and over half of the respondents underline the continued focus on sustainability and digital solutions, even in view of the challenges of pandemic. These developments ensure that despite the serious situation at VW, the medium -sized sector in Germany is optimistic about the future and is well prepared to master potential risks.
