Traffic chaos at Christmas time: traffic jams and construction sites in Tyrol!
On December 22, 2025, drivers in Austria expect significant traffic disruptions, particularly due to transit traffic from Germany towards the Balkans and Romania, as well as on return journeys. The ÖAMTC warns of slow convoy traffic on important axes, with the Suben – A8 – A1 – A21 – S1 to the Nickelsdorf border and the A8/A9 at the Voralpenkreuz junction to the Fügen border in particular being classified as critical. Traffic jams can be exacerbated by accidents or broken vehicles.
As Christmas Eve approaches, an increase in traffic in ski areas is expected, especially in the Tyrol and Salzburg regions. The B179 long-distance pass route and the Tauern Autobahn A10, which are frequented by many travelers, are particularly busy. The Staumelder is already reporting the first delays in Tyrol, where travel times between Fernpass and Lermoos can sometimes be up to 27 minutes longer than the usual time frame. Traffic jams have also been reported on the A12 between Kufstein-Süd and Kiefersfelden, causing a loss of up to 6 minutes.
Preparations and recommendations
Before traveling, it is advisable to find out about current road conditions and have necessary items such as winter tires and snow chains ready. Critical information also concerns the A2 between Friedberg-Pinggau and Pinkafeld, where extensive renovation work is being carried out after a landslide. The Plöcken Pass will remain temporarily open over the holidays, while most mountain roads, with the exception of the Tyrolean Hahntennjoch, are closed.
Several events will also attract thousands of visitors over the next few days. The Ski World Cup in Semmering (December 27th and 28th) and the 2025/26 Four Hills Tournament in Innsbruck and Bischofshofen could also have an impact on traffic. Regional roadblocks are also expected during the January rally, which will take place from January 2nd to 4th.
Regional traffic reports and challenges
The first traffic jams and slow traffic flows have already been documented in Tyrol, such as on the E532 B179 between Reutte-Nord and the Füssen border tunnel. Other affected routes include the B16, B171 and several motorway sections, all of which have high traffic densities. There are also construction sites on the A12 E60 between Mötz and Reutte, which are also causing delays.
The current traffic situation is exacerbated by various construction sites in the region. These include, among other things, construction work on the B171 between Wörgl and the commercial area, which is most affected. These factors put Tyrol in focus as a central transport hub in Europe, especially in the winter when those seeking relaxation use the scenic panoramic roads and pass roads.
The Federal Office for Transport points out that the toll roads in Tyrol and the high level of traffic monitoring on transit routes make it necessary to be well prepared for travel. Drivers should be aware that there will be frequent traffic jams on the main traffic arteries, such as the Brenner motorway, at the start and end of the holiday, which will have a decisive impact on travel planning.
