Traffic chaos in Mülheim: New bus routes during bridge closures!
Mülheim.A drama for local transport in Mülheim-Styrum is imminent! In April next year the Hauskamp Bridge will be closed for a whopping 15 months, and this will have a massive impact on bus connections between the city center and Styrum. Bus route 130, which takes students to school every day, urgently needs to be rerouted to avoid dangerous situations.
The plans call for line 130 to run directly past the Brothers Grimm School – six times an hour! That means extra traffic, especially at peak times when parents pick up their children. The CDU, Greens and SPD are now campaigning for the buses not to be routed via Albertstrasse, but rather via Kaiser-Wilhelm-Strasse and Oberhausener Strasse. An attempt to increase the safety of school children and reduce chaos in front of school.
Alternative solutions on the table
But this diversion also carries risks! Kaiser-Wilhelm-Straße is expected to be heavily loaded during the new bridge construction, which could lead to delays. In addition, the additional bus traffic could endanger the safety of children moving in this area. Therefore, consideration is also being given to negotiating with the owners of Aldi and Thyssen-Krupp-Schulte in order to run the bus route over their properties. This solution could enable the same travel time and serve all stops on line 130 at the same time.
The decision on the diversions will be made at the upcoming district council meeting on Monday. The parties agree: the safety of the children is the top priority! Mülheim is facing a challenge that needs to be overcome in order to maintain the mobility of its citizens even during construction work.
