Third pigeon house opened in Jena: a step towards cleanliness!

An impressive innovation for the city of Jena: On October 25, 2024, the third pigeon house was inaugurated in City Carree, exactly in Löbderstraße 2! Mayor Christian Gerlitz and numerous partners celebrated the event and emphasized the importance of this initiative for the animal welfare dealings with city pigeons. The opening of the 100,000 euro project is a crucial step in the fight against the often criticized pigeon population that rages in the city!

The new pigeon house in the heart of Jena

This pigeon house, which is now equipped with a total of 140 nesting sites, is supervised by an experienced pigeon manager. It is the result of a cooperation between the city of Jena and various institutions, including the University Hospital Jena and the Sparkasse Jena-Saale-Holzland. This partnership has contributed to creating a species -appropriate home for the urban birds, which not only protects the animals themselves, but also increases the cleanliness of the city!

The existing pigeon houses on the Löbdergraben and on the Goethe gallery have shown that such facilities can minimize conflicts. Nevertheless, the need for an additional pigeon house in a central location was repeatedly loud! The construction not only managed the pigeon population sustainably, but also significantly reduces contamination by feces. So the residents and visitors of Jena can soon enjoy in a cleaner and friendly environment!
