From the GDR to the digital revolution: A programming pioneer from Gotha tells the story!
Find out how my work in the GDR led to the development of universal software and which programs I created.
From the GDR to the digital revolution: A programming pioneer from Gotha tells the story!
A fascinating look back at the art of programming in the GDR!At the weekend I had a warm exchange with my family that took me deep into the memories of my life in the GDR. These conversations awakened the passion I felt for my work at the time. After my studies, I started my career at “Lufttechnik” in Gotha, where I was not only offered a job, but also an apartment for my family.
The beginnings of my programming careerstarted in the data center of “Carl Zeiss” in Jena, where I worked as a skilled worker while I was still finishing high school. In Gotha I threw myself passionately into programming and wanted to solve more than just operational tasks. I developed a revolutionary sorting program that surpassed all other software solutions! This program was not only operationally neutral, but could also be sold multiple times - a real hit!
The masterpieces of programming
My passion for universal solutions led to the creation of three critical programs:“DEPP”– a data entry check programPrint programfor evaluations and oneMagnetic tape routine. These “pillars” made it easy to handle operational tasks efficiently. But the best was yet to come: I was headhunted by another company in Gotha, where I developed my masterpiece “DAZU”. The name was cleverly chosen – DA for data and ZU for Zerbst, Uwe. “DAZU” soon became a topic of conversation and combined all the important functions in one program.
With the turnaroundI decided to give up programming and use the modern technologies of the West. In 1994 I moved to “AIK” in Kassel, where I soon realized that many of the programs I had purchased still needed improvements. So I started creating new evaluations with EXCEL - my third creative phase. A few years ago I came across the old documents for “DAZU” and realized that I could no longer understand the details of my programming at the time. But the memories and the knowledge of having helped many companies remain unforgettable!
