Supermarket tricks: So deceive Rewe, Lidl & Co. with colors!

A new scandal in the supermarkets! Rewe, Lidl and Co. use sophisticated tricks to deceive their customers and make food appear more tempting. A remarkable trick that now comes to light is based on the packaging of citrus fruits. These are often presented in bright yellow or orange networks that appear that the fruits are fresh and juicy. But that's not all!

The perception psychologist Professor Karl Gegenfurtner from the Justus Liebig University Gießen made an astonishing discovery during his research. During a shopping, he reached for oranges in an orange network that looked extremely appetizing. But when I got home, reality turned out to be green: the oranges were green and looked anything but mature! This shocking experience led him to a deep analysis of color perception in the supermarket.

The confetti illusion: colors in the supermarket

The phenomenon that comes into play here is referred to as "confetti illusion" or color assimilation. This optical deception causes the color of the fruits to be influenced by the network colors above. In an experiment, opposing lines put orange lines about the image of an immature orange - and lo and behold, the green color disappeared! The orange illusion was perfect! The scientist explains that this color change is created by light reflection between the network and the fruit and the color saturation of the products is increased. A nice sight for customers, but a deceptive reality!

"The color assimilation has a strong impact on the appearance of the color," said Gegenfurtner. A high for color psychology, a low point for the consumer! Customers of Rewe, Lidl and Co. should be particularly mindful for the next purchase and cannot be blinded by the colorful nets.
