Spectacular accident in Herisau: car flies over the fence onto the roof of the house!
On the night of September 20, 2025, a spectacular traffic accident occurred in Herisau. At around 2:40 a.m., a 31-year-old driver was driving at excessive speed and initially rammed two parked cars. The impact pushed the first vehicle against a second one, but the driver continued his journey undeterred and drove over a sidewalk.
He then broke through a fence and fell into a lower garden, where the car ended up on the roof of an annex. Despite the dramatic situation, the driver only suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital. The police declared him unfit to drive and revoked his driver's license on the spot.
Causes and consequences
The accident caused significant material damage: two vehicles were severely damaged, with one classified as a total loss. The damage to the building amounts to tens of thousands of francs. The Herisau fire department was on site with two vehicles and nine emergency services to contain leaking liquids and ensure fire protection. A crane was called in to rescue the vehicle.
In traffic accidents, early intervention by emergency services is crucial in order to minimize consequential damage. In Germany, around 2.5 million road traffic accidents were registered in 2024, which represents a decrease compared to the previous year. However, the number of road deaths remains worrying. According to Statista, 2,770 people died in road traffic in Germany in 2024.
The role of speed
Improper speed is one of the most common causes of traffic accidents resulting in personal injuries. According to destatis.de, adventurous driving maneuvers are often not only risky for the driver himself, but also for other road users. 40% of alcohol-related accidents resulted in personal injury in 2024, representing another alarming aspect of road safety.
The EU transport ministers are pursuing the “Vision Zero” goal, which aims for zero traffic fatalities by 2050. In this context, measures to improve road safety were discussed, for example through better infrastructure and awareness among road users. The introduction of autonomous vehicles could also bring about a positive change in the future.
Finally, it should be noted that traffic accidents like the one in Herisau are both a reminder and a warning. They highlight the importance of responsible driving, monitoring speed limits and preventing drunk driving.
