Strange celestial phenomena over Rügen: Flying fish or sand martins?

Thiessow.Vacationers on the beach in Rügen are amazed! Strange flying objects in the sky have caused a stir. Peter Schwestka, an attentive holiday guest, took a photo that his daughter took during her stay in Thiessow. In this picture, which shows a cloudy sky and the rough Baltic Sea, strange “fish” can be seen in the air!

“At home we noticed that something was wrong!” reports Schwestka. The fish not only seem to “fly” above the surface of the water, but shoot straight up! A phenomenon that raises questions: Has something like this ever happened before Rügen? And have other vacationers had similar sightings?

Expert opinion: No flying fish!

Mario Voigt-Haden, an expert in environmental and nature conservation, took a closer look at the picture and came to a clear conclusion: "These cannot be flying fish! These animals only sail over the water and reach a maximum height of two to three meters - not the eight to ten meters that can be seen here!" Flying fish are at home in tropical waters, but not in the Baltic Sea!

Voigt-Haden suspects that the flying objects are sand martins, which are widespread in Europe. These slender birds hunt insects and could appear like “flying fish” due to the perspective of the photo. “I’ve never heard of flying fish in the Baltic Sea,” he adds. A mystery remains, but excitement among holidaymakers is guaranteed!
