Serious traffic accident on B 24: Great excitement in Schneizlreuth!
On Thursday afternoon, a serious traffic accident occurred on the commuter route via the Kleine Deutsche Eck in Schneizlreuth, which resulted in several injuries. According to Krone, a 60-year-old Austrian who was driving a Hyundai from Lofer to Bad Reichenhall lost control of his vehicle for reasons that are still unclear and drove into the oncoming lane. The accident occurred shortly after 4 p.m.
Multiple vehicles were involved in the incident. The 60-year-old first hit an oncoming car driven by a 61-year-old Swiss man who was able to avoid the collision in his Mercedes, but was still hit on the side of the front of the vehicle. The Hyundai then crashed head-on into the vehicle of a 24-year-old Austrian woman who was driving behind the Swiss man. This collision resulted in the 24-year-old's car being pushed against another vehicle.
Injury balance and rescue measures
The 24-year-old suffered serious injuries in the accident, while the person who caused the accident and the 61-year-old Swiss only suffered minor injuries. All three injured people were immediately taken to the hospital in Bad Reichenhall to be treated. A total of three people were injured, as the Kurier reported. The total damage to the vehicles involved is estimated at around 70,000 euros.
The fire brigades from Schneizlreuth and Bad Reichenhall were quickly on site to secure the scene of the accident and tow away the vehicles involved. Federal Highway 21 was partially completely closed until after 6 p.m. during the clean-up work, which led to a significant backlog in both directions.
Traffic accidents in context
This accident is not isolated and is part of a worrying trend. In 2023, there were approximately 2.5 million road traffic accidents in Germany, and although the number of personal injury accidents remains at a similar level to 1955, overall traffic levels have increased in recent decades. According to Statista, issues such as insufficient distance, inadequate speed and driving under the influence of alcohol remain common causes of traffic accidents. Road safety efforts are supported by the Vision Zero goal, which aims to achieve zero road deaths by 2050.
The current figures illustrate the challenges highlighted: In 2023, according to information, 19,193 traffic deaths in Germany in 1970 had fallen to 2,839 in 2023. Nevertheless, there is a need for action, especially with regard to the increasing number of e-bike accidents, which must also be taken into account in the future.
