Drinking water consumption in Schleswig -Holstein is falling - what is behind it?

in Schleswig-Holstein, the drinking water consumption per head shrinks dramatically! In 2022, each inhabitant only used an average of 127.8 liters a day - a remarkable decline of 15.6 percent compared to the 151.5 liters in 2001. The tap field drops deeper and lower! The turn in the use of water comes in times of increasing awareness of sustainability and water shortages.

The state's waterworks supplied a total of 178.1 million cubic meters of water in 2022. Around 75 percent of them, i.e. 134.8 million cubic meters, went directly to households and small companies. This corresponds to almost half of the entire water of the Great Plöner Lake! The water consumption has increased as well as the price, because for a cubic meter of water, consumers had to pay an average of 1.57 euros between 2008 and 2022 - an increase of 19.8 percent!

price increase and higher basic fees

The basic fee for water has almost doubled and is now 71.48 euros per year, contrary to a much cheaper starting time of 36.36 euros. So it was not only less common for consumers, but also expensive! On Helgoland, the residents have to count on a whopping 7.35 euros per 1,000 liters of water, a price that reflects the elaborate process of seawater relaxation.

These numbers are alarming and show how important efficient water use has become in Schleswig-Holstein. The development in drinking water consumption and the constant increasing prices require a rethink in water use.
