Free lunch for Stormarn's children: health without a price!

Something fundamental could soon change in the Stormarn district when it comes to feeding children in daycare centers and schools. Parents are currently having to dig deep into their pockets to pay for their children's lunch, but the Food-Gourmet-Gaststätten union (NGG) is calling for free lunch for all children in the region. The goal is to provide all 165 kindergartens and 64 public schools in the Stormarn district with a balanced and healthy lunch.

Anne Widder from the NGG Hamburg-Elmshorn puts it in a nutshell: “A warm meal that parents don’t have to pay for out of their own wallet is the best guarantee of a healthy diet for all children and young people.” Her statement highlights the urgent need for change, especially given that many parents are under pressure to provide their children with fresh, healthy meals every lunchtime.

The Benefits of a Free Lunch

Parents who often don't have the time or financial resources to prepare healthy meals every day could benefit from this arrangement. A regular lunch for the children could not only reduce the stress of these parents, but also significantly reduce the risk of malnutrition. The NGG therefore urgently appeals to the state government of Schleswig-Holstein to create the conditions for this important initiative. The Citizens' Council also made a clear recommendation for free lunch.

Another important point that Widder emphasizes is the quality of the meals offered. "It's about healthy food - that is, good quality ingredients and preparation. But also about fair food," she adds. The municipalities in the Stormarn district are called upon to ensure that cooks, suppliers and food servers are paid the standard wage, despite higher costs.

This initiative could represent an important step towards healthy eating for children, especially at a time when many parents are struggling with the challenges of maintaining a balanced diet. Given the positive effects that a healthy lunch can have on children's development, it remains to be seen how the state government will respond to the demands.
