Return after the holiday: vacationers traffic jams on the islands!

The last few days have been a real joy for many sun worshipers and travelers, because the holidays for the "Day of German Unity" ensured a pleasant short working week. Many tourists took the opportunity to treat themselves to a short vacation on the popular North Sea islands of Sylt, Föhr or Amrum. But on Sunday, October 6th, for most people there was their way back home, which led to a huge return trip.

Despite the lively returning wave, the police control center in Harrislee reported that up to this point there had not yet been any significant traffic jams. "So far, the wave of return has been running smoothly," said a spokesman for the police. Nevertheless, it was shown that the spontaneous booking of places on the popular car trains and ferries could become a major problem because many travelers had hoped for the last free places.

bottlenecks for car trains and ferries

The demand for places on the car train from Westerland on Sylt to Niebüll was enormous. Most departures were already fully booked on Sunday at 11 a.m., with the exception of the last two trips at 5:55 p.m. and 6:55 p.m. Anyone who tried to get a place at short notice either had to be lucky to find a vacant place or move their departure to the late evening. The situation was similar to the WDR ferry from Föhr to Dagebüll, where there were hardly any bookings possible during the day. Only the connection at 8 p.m. could still be reserved, only to arrive in Dagebüll at 8:50 p.m.

Because of this development, both the car trains and the ferries are almost fully booked, which is due to the rush of vacationers who want to go back after a relaxed stay. Although the return itself is harmonious, the fully booked places of the means of transport show that many already long for a short -winded stay. Opportunities for other travelers remain limited because the entire situation is worried about the holiday time and the beautiful weather.

The continued demand for travel to the North Sea islands and the difficulties on returning raise the question of how providers of transport services can be better prepared in the future in order to avoid such situations. In addition, the management of the booking capacities could play a crucial role in order to meet the needs of travelers.
