Storm surges on the Baltic Sea: Current water levels and warnings for Kiel

Storm surges are a regular phenomenon on the Baltic Sea! An impressive five storm surges were recorded between July 2022 and June 2023, while seven storm situations were documented in the previous season! The Baltic Sea remains unpredictable, as low water periods, two in 2022/2023 and four in 2021/2022, occurred again and again. The most important water levels around the Bay of Kiel, Eckernförde, Rendsburg and Ostholstein are crucial for residents and show the current state of affairs.

There is currently a warning: The Baltic Sea could suffer from flooding! The different classes of storm surges are alarming: a “storm surge” is between 1.00 and 1.25 meters above the mean water level, while a “medium storm surge” reaches up to 1.50 meters! But that's not all - in a "severe storm surge" we are already at 2.00 meters, and in a "very severe storm surge" the values ​​even exceed the 2 meter mark!

The water levels in and around Kiel-Holtenau were closely monitored. The highest value ever recorded in this region was a staggering 797 centimeters - a record that has stood since 1872! The forecasts are worrying and the flood center is monitoring the situation closely. The population must be prepared!

How is warning given? Official bodies such as the flood control center and local authorities are standing by if levels reach threatening heights. Warnings are spread via radio, television, sound trucks and even social media to inform and protect citizens in a timely manner. During a storm surge, it is paramount to be alert and put safety first!
