Depression in Steinburg: Alarming numbers surprise experts!

In Schleswig-Holstein, depression diseases reach new heights, as the AOK Nordwest reports. In 2022, around 318,000 people were under medical treatment due to this mental illness. The situation in the Steinburg district is particularly alarming, where about 13 percent of the population are affected. This number reflects a continuous increase in diseases in the past five years, which may be related to the tense income situation in the region.

The AOK Nordwest emphasizes that the considerable psychological stress is a serious challenge for many people. This development throws a shadow on health care in the region and shows how important it is to create suitable support offers for those affected.

Hydrogen bus project set in Dithmarschen

In the district of Dithmarschen, the plans for the purchase of hydrogen -powered buses are put on hold. The purchase of five of these environmentally friendly vehicles was originally considered, which would have caused costs of around 700,000 euros. However, due to a lack of nationwide funding, the total costs for the implementation of the project would increase significantly. In addition, the existing contracts with DB Regio Bus Nord only run until the end of 2025, which is why the buses could only be used for a year in the worst case. Therefore, the district administration sees no way to continue to pursue the project, and the final decision is still pending because the Dithmarscher district council will decide on it on Tuesday evening.

The decision not to buy hydrogen buses is particularly unfortunate in times of climate change, since such technologies could contribute to reducing emissions. It remains to be seen how the region will react to this challenge.

animal rights activists are committed to stray cats

While in Dithmarschen and Steinburg the animal welfare associations are active with a castration campaign for free -range cats, they face ever greater challenges. Around 200 or 120 cats are currently being looked after in the animal shelters in Tensbüttel and Itzehoe. In view of the high number of stray animals, the capacity of the clubs is very limited.

Despite the difficulties, the animal rights activists hope for valuable information from the population in order to identify and capture street cats. Even if boarding places are not available immediately, it is important to have the animals neutered to prevent further increase. This measure is a small but crucial step for animal welfare in the region.

Helgoland ferry in Büsum repaired

A technical problem has led the Helgoland ferry "Funny Girl" to be maneuverable on Sunday evening on the North Sea. The ship, which was traveling with about 250 passengers, drove around for hours until it was finally brought to repair in Büsum. The responsible shipping company, Adler & Eils, has confirmed that nobody was injured in the incident. The ferry is expected to start operating again from Wednesday, while the "MS Northern Lights" runs as a replacement. Such breakdowns often raise questions about the reliability of the means of transport, especially in touristy -frequented areas such as Helgoland.

Overall, the current situation in Schleswig-Holstein shows how diverse the challenges in different areas of life are, be it in terms of mental health, transport infrastructure or animal welfare. It remains to be seen how those responsible will react to these different topics.

The news from the region will be broadcast every day at 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. in the Heide studio, which reports on the events in the Steinburg, Dithmarschen districts and southern Friesland.
