Hurricane gusts and storm surge: North Sea under water – immediate warnings!
On January 6, 2025, the German Weather Service (DWD) warns of hurricane gusts and storm surges in the North Sea. Affected regions are Schleswig-Holstein, Lower Saxony and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The DWD forecasts hurricane-like gusts of up to 110 km/h, particularly in North Frisia and Heligoland. The severe weather warning is valid until 6 a.m. on Tuesday morning.
The current weather conditions are already having a significant impact on traffic. The SyltShuttle does not transport camping vehicles, vehicles with trailers, trucks with empty trailers or dangerous goods. Floods that could be 1 to 1.5 meters above normal levels are expected on the East Frisian coast and in the Weser area. A flood of 1.5 m above mean flood is expected in the Elbe area, while the storm surge warning is in effect until 9:22 a.m. on Tuesday and will reach a peak of 1.25 to 1.75 m above mean flood in the Hamburg Elbe area.
Warnings and traffic disruptions
The authorities advise protecting lower buildings and bringing cars to safety. On the North Sea coast of Lower Saxony, ferry departures to the East Frisian islands have already been canceled, and train services on the Nordwestbahn in Lower Saxony have been suspended due to the storm. A falling tree on the tracks of the Hanover-Hamburg ICE route forces diversions. In addition, a 60-year-old was critically injured by a falling tree in the Wesermarsch, and ferry traffic between Rostock and Gedser in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has also been suspended. Travelers are recommended to use the crossing between Puttgarden and Rødby. The weather forecast also speaks of a cold snap with possible snowfall in the north on Tuesday.
In the region of the North Frisian Islands, especially on Sylt, there is currently calm and sunny weather, with no current severe weather warnings, such as Sylt TV reported. However, there are general tips for dealing with severe weather that citizens should follow, including seeking shelter in safe buildings and avoiding coastal areas due to high waves and storm surges.
It is advisable to remain calm and regularly inform yourself about the current weather situation, especially by following the recommendations of the weather services and authorities.
