Red wine and rivalry: Schwerin celebrates tradition with Lübeck!

A festival of tradition and enjoyment! The Lübeck Martensmann, also known as Stefan Pagel, caused excitement and joy on Sunday at the Schwerin market when he brought the coveted red pone. However, the question of whether this noble drop is a voluntary gift or a mandatory submission caused an amusing discussion between Pagel and Schwerin City President Sebastian Ehlers.

With a festive move in a carriage through the city center of Schwerin, accompanied by Lübeck President Peter Peterseit and the charming night watchman Bettina Zeise, the audience on the market square was enthusiastically welcomed. Hundreds of Schwerinern waited to taste the delicious red wine, which has been the focus since Friday as part of a medieval market. Ehlers thanked on stage for the "beautiful gift" and came across the friendly gang between Schwerin and Lübeck with the Martensmann.

A custom with history

The tradition of the Rotspon transport from Lübeck to Schwerin goes back to 1520, as documented. A letter of thanks from the Count of Schwerin from 1330 shows that this custom is deeply rooted in history. After the reunification of Germany, the custom was revived, and today the red pone is no longer hidden in the duke's wine cellar, but rather distributed to the visitors. A high for tradition and the joy it brings!
