Revitalization in Kiel: 20 million euros for the industry of the future!
In Kiel-Friedrichsort, there is a comprehensive revitalization of the 150-year-old industrial area, which is redesigned as a “beach town of Kiel”. Minister of Economics Claus Ruhe Madsen presented a funding notice of almost 20 million euros to Mayor Dr. Ulf fighters for this important project. The funds come from funds from the joint task "Improvement of the regional economic structure" and from state funds. This project is part of a larger program for economic support in Schleswig-Holstein, which includes up to 50 million euros for the renovation of the area, as the Schleswig-Holstein website reports.
a new commercial area in the focus
The measures to revitalize the beach stop include the development and reorganization of the industrial area with the aim of creating a sustainable energy supply and modern transport infrastructure. This includes the dismantling of some existing buildings as well as a complete revision of the supply and disposal systems, including electricity/heat supply and water pipes. The groundbreaking ceremony for the extensive renovation measures is planned for late summer 2025, and the work should progress by the beginning of 2027, as is currently being explained in Kiel's report.
Overall, the planned area extends over approx. 34 hectares with 30 factory and warehouses, whereby the headquarters of the Caterpillar company lies in the southern part, while in the northern area of track systems that are to be reactivated. Mayor fighters emphasizes that the revitalization should create over 1,000 new jobs, which will further strengthen the region's economy. He emphasizes: "The beach town is unique nationwide as an innovative economic area via rail, road accessible and directly on the water". The region will significantly advance this development in competitiveness, as the Schleswig-Holstein report confirms.
The entire development should take place gradually: After the first construction phase, which was completed in 2022, the focus is now on the second section with the development of access and production parking areas. The goal is not only to promote industrial growth, but also to design part of the area for public use, including a beach access. This means that an earlier confidentiality area for industry is now partially accessible to the public, which could upgrade the whole region.
