Kiel sets standards: 70 percent country current for cruise ships!
Kiel, Deutschland - The seaport Kiel triumphs with an impressive land electricity rate of almost 70 percent! In the 2024 season, a total of 115 cruise ships used this environmentally friendly energy supply, which raises the port to one of the "worldwide leading ports in the land power supply of ferry and cruise ships". The port recorded around 1.05 million cruise passengers this season and is still expecting three ships in December.
Kiel welcomed 181 cruise ships this year, including 14 river cruise ships. Since the first cruise ships in Kiel used country power in 2021, over 200 ships have already benefited from this emission -free energy supply! By 2025, Kiel is planning to expand the land stream system on the Baltic Seakai in order to achieve a fantastic land electricity quota of 100 percent. This could supply up to seven ships with clean energy at the same time. The investments in the infrastructure amount to almost 55 million euros.
country power also in other German ports
But Kiel is not the only port to rely on country power. In Rostock-Warnemünde, the terminals P7 and P8 are equipped with country power. Hamburg offers the energy supply in the Hamburg-Altona terminals and also in Steinwerder since 2024. Land electricity on the Columbuskaje from 2025 will also be available in Bremerhaven.
Currently, the use of country power for cruise shipping companies is voluntary. But a change is imminent! From 2030, the most important European ports will apply for the decrease in country current, provided that it is offered in the port. The times of fossil fuel could soon be a thing of the past - and the European ports are preparing for it!
