Tourism in the Duchy of Lauenburg: Co2 emissions now on the trail!

In Duchy of Lauenburg, an exciting pilot project is started, which puts your finger in the wound of climate -damaging emissions that tourism brings with it! Duchy of Lauenburg Marketing and Service GmbH (HLMS) has set itself the task of carrying out comprehensive greenhouse gas accounting in order to find out exactly how much CO2 in this charming region has on its conscience. This significant undertaking is funded by the German Climate Mund Tourism (DKT), which is part of the national climate protection initiative (NKI) of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection (BMWK). Duchy of Lauenburg belongs to five selected pilot destinations, together with the Borkum, Bremerhaven, Kinzigtal and Nordeifel.

The decline in emissions is not a dream, but now has to become a reality! Corina Müller, the district's climate protection officer, passionately explains: "Only when we know the initial situation can we achieve real improvements in the long term." The focus is on the identification of emission sources in gastronomy, leisure, accommodation and mobility. From October 2024, data collection will begin, with the first results that are expected in spring 2025. The companies that take part in the pilot project free of charge will know exactly where they are in terms of their emissions and receive individual evaluations - anonymized to protect the regional data.

Scientific support for precise data

The Potsdam Institute for Climate Illic Research (PIK) takes over the scientific implementation of this ambitious measure. Helga Weisz from PIK emphasizes how important the THG calculations in the pilot regions are: "We can learn a lot from the feedback from the companies to the data collection process." Managing Director Günter Schmidt from HLMS is convinced of the advantages of this initiative: "We create the basis for better understanding the service chains in Lauenburg tourism and, if necessary, to initiate changes." Interested companies are invited to report to project manager Emily Mehan to get more information about this future -oriented project.
