Standstill in Zwickau: Large prison is delayed and costs twice!

There is still a standstill on the construction site of the major prison in Zwickau! There is hardly any progress over a year after the general planner has been terminated. A spokesman for the state business of real estate and construction management confirmed that there is still no schedule for the completion of the building and that the question of the additional costs remains unanswered. The uncertainty hovers over the project, which was once considered a hope.

The construction costs have now been exploded! Originally estimated at 150 million euros, expenses have more than doubled. Thuringia bears about 45 percent of the costs and now has to expect a dramatic financial burden. The first prisoners were supposed to move into the new detention center five years ago, but now the opening has been postponed indefinitely - a real nightmare for the planners!

General planner fired!

The Situation escalated when Saxony pulled the ripcord as a client in October 2023 and terminated the general planner. Delays, exploding costs and services not performed were the reasons for this drastic step. The new major prison should offer space for up to 820 prisoners - 450 from Saxony and 370 from Thuringia. The planning was originally planned for 380 employees, including 170 from Thuringia. But now everything is in the balance!
