New access for Zwickau main cemetery: rest after 160 years!

The Zwickau main cemetery will soon become quieter, because after 160 years it will receive a second access. The Finance Committee agreed to release the necessary funds of 110,000 euros for this project on Tuesday. The completion of the new north access is planned for the middle of next year.

The project is not entirely new, because the stump of the main path in the north was seen earlier, which ends shortly before the cemetery wall. Now the wall is opened and the path should be extended. For a long time this was prevented by an electricity house that has now been demolished.

reasons for the new access

The trigger for the implementation of the project was the planned construction site on Crimmitschauer Strasse between Kolping and Friedrich-Engels-Straße. Since the only existing access is hindered, an alternative access option was needed. Jörg Voigtsberger, the head of the cemetery office, reported on various provisional solutions that were considered as replacement access. However, these would have proven to be very cumbersome and complex. Therefore, his office chose a permanent solution.

Another important point that Voigtsberger spoke to on the committee was the increased operation in the cemetery. The number of burials is increasing; As a result, there are also more vehicles on the way. Since most visitors are in the northwestern part of the cemetery, these previous paths are quite long.

The decision about the project was not entirely unanimous. While six committee members spoke out for the new access, three against it, especially members of BFZ and AfD. Nevertheless, the majority were enough to advance the project. In the future, this measure could not only improve the flow of traffic in the cemetery itself, but also make a contribution to a quiet and respectful stay on the site. If you look at the current situation, such developments seem to be inevitable. Further information and details on this topic can be found in an article on www.radiozwickau.de .
