Bad Düben counts on fast approval for mountain shipmühle by 2025!

In the city of Bad Düben, the historic mountain ship mill is currently being reworked intensively. This mill, which is on the castle grounds, is said to be back into operation until German Mühlentag in 2025. The starting point for the efforts was a serious damage: in February 2021 the wave wheel of the mill broke. The reason for this was in the penetration of water into the wooden strain, which made the wave inside rotten.

Various local actors have teamed up to advance the necessary repairs. These include the dissolved home association, the city administration, the Evangelical School Center, the Mühlen region North Saxony Association and a mill expert from the Ore Mountains. Despite occasional differences in terms of construction and the choice of materials, the conversations now seem to develop in a positive direction. Thomas Brandt from the building authority pointed out that a tropical wood wave is considered as a solution, but approval for this is still pending. This must be submitted for the application for funding, according to information from www.lvz.de .

Bad Düben awaits for repair of the mountain shipmühle

The urgency also exists due to new import regulations for the tropical wood, which must be ordered this year. At least there is the possibility to carry out the installation next year. Mayor Astrid Münster (WBD) was concerned about the long duration of the procedure and the difficulties in quick decision -making within the monument protection. She already addressed these concerns in the North Saxony district council and demanded more recent opinion formation on the proposed mill repair to ensure that funding can be used efficiently.

To support the offensive, Werner Wartenburger (SPD/CDU), Chairman of the Museumsdorf Association Dübener Heide. In his opinion, the mountain shipmill must be ready for operation until the opening of the German milling day next year.

In Bad Düben there is the main drive shaft of the mountain shipmill, which is now to be repaired.

The mill region of North Saxony, in which Bad Düben is located, is known for its historical importance. It extends over the old districts of Delitzsch and Torgau-Schatz and houses a variety of mill types. With a total of 25 mills, this region is a unique diversity, including the only still preserved ship mill in Germany. Bad Düben is particularly rich in mills and houses five of them, including the mountain shipmühle, which was last in operation in 1956. Their name results from the connection to the Alaun mine, in which she once worked.
