RB Leipzig: Squad change is imminent – who has to go?
RB Leipzig is facing an extensive squad shake-up after a disappointing season in which the club only finished seventh and thus missed out on an international starting place. According to a report by crown There are 14 players on the cut list. Only 13 professionals are still firmly scheduled, while five other players remain unclear due to contractual clauses. The previous coach Marco Rose was fired at the end of March and Zsolt Löw took over responsibility on an interim basis until the end of the season.
The situation calls for a coach who can identify with the club and the style of play. The possible coaches include well-known candidates such as Cesc Fabregas, Oliver Glasner, Roger Schmidt and Matthias Jaissle. To improve its financial base, the club plans to sell players such as Xavi Simons and Benjamin Sesko, with the aim of generating revenue between 150 and 170 million euros.
Planned changes in the squad
The squad planning shows that top performers such as David Raum, with an exit clause of 50 million euros, and Castello Lukeba, whose clause is 90 million euros, are potentially willing to leave. In addition, the salary budget is to be reduced by 20 percent to make room for new acquisitions. Experienced players such as Yussuf Poulsen, Kevin Kampl, Peter Gulacsi, Willi Orban, Lukas Klostermann, Amadou Haidara as well as loan players Timo Werner and André Silva can look for new clubs.
The restructuring follows a shakeup that already took place in the summer of 2023, during which numerous stars left the club, but this also led to high income. The new sports director Rouven Schröder, who replaced Max Eberl, should adjust the transfer policy for the coming season, which should be less drastic. Marcel Schäfer is expected to become the new sports director and will still familiarize himself with the ongoing transfer planning.
Transfer market and future perspective
RB Leipzig's chances of having a competitive squad are good as the club was able to qualify for the Champions League again. Nevertheless, the Euro 2024 could delay activity on the transfer market. Players like Janis Blaswich, whose sale is being discussed, are the focus of current plans. Peter Gulacsi has extended his contract while Maarten Vandevoordt was signed from KRC Genk for 10 million euros.
The return of various loan players from last season, including André Silva and Ilaix Moriba, could also bring a breath of fresh air to the squad. The future of Hugo Novoa and Frederik Jäkel remains uncertain, as does that of Sanoussy Ba, who was unable to perform in Austria. The club's financial balance sheet shows that so far income of 98.20 million euros is offset by expenses of 119.50 million euros, resulting in a total balance of -21.30 million euros.
Despite the challenges, RB Leipzig attaches great importance to preserving the talents and strengths in the squad. The club's homepage Transfer market also shows that the Red Bull Arena also served as a venue during the 2006 World Cup and currently has a capacity of 44,345 spectators. The club is currently in 7th place in the 2024 Bundesliga season.
