Agency of asylum applications in Saxony: A worrying trend!

In 2024, significantly fewer people in Saxony made an asylum application. According to the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF), there were almost 11,300 applications, which means a decline of more than 5,000 compared to the previous year. This corresponds to 4.9 percent of all asylum applications in Germany. Most asylum seekers came from Syria, Afghanistan and Turkey.

In the 47 recording facilities in Saxony, fewer and fewer people live because the space capacities in 2024 were often not fully exploited. Almost 1,200 people were assigned in Dresden by October 2024, which is almost 1,000 less than in the entire year 2023. Leipzig recorded a similar decline in the assignment of refugees. The number of asylum applications had steadily increased in 2023, while a decline was recorded for the first time in 2024, as reported.

nationwide decline

Nationwide, the BAMF accepted almost 230,000 income in 2024, which represents a decline of over 30 percent compared to the previous year. North Rhine-Westphalia recorded the most applications with 45,280 applications and makes almost 20 percent of all applications in Germany. The total procedure for initial and follow-up applications was 8.7 months.

For Saxony, this is a striking change, after continuous increase in asylum applications in previous years. The developments in Saxony are part of a larger trend that becomes clear in the BAMF data. You can also find information on this in a report by Tagesschau.de .
