Dilapidated agra bridge in Leipzig: Is there a risk of sudden collapse?
Leipzig/Dresden –The agra bridge, a dilapidated prestressed concrete bridge from the 1970s, is the focus of attention! Every day over 40,000 cars struggle over this endangered structure on the B2 to Leipzig. An expensive new building is planned for 2028, but the question remains: Will the bridge last until then?
After the dramatic collapse of the Carola Bridge in Dresden on September 11th, the State Office for the Environment and Transport (LASUV) took immediate measures. The agra bridge is now undergoing a special test and the result could change everything! Everything from speed limits to immediate closures is possible. This bridge is not only a bottleneck, but also a potential risk that has already been secured with additional support pillars.
Bridges under the microscope
But the agra bridge is just the tip of the iceberg! A total of 19 bridges in Saxony are being critically examined, including four more in the Leipzig area. The list includes the S50 bridge over the Eula, the S68 bridge over the Weiße Elster and the S46 bridge over the Pleiße.The Elbe bridge in Bad Schandau was closed on November 6th after alarming reports were available.
The experts warn: Although none of the bridges are in acute danger of collapsing, the Hennigsdorf prestressing steel used could crack under tensile stress and have fatal consequences. The results of the exams are expected in the next four weeks. In the worst case, there is a risk of kilometers of diversions via the Leipzig-Südwest and -Südost motorway connections!
