Lice plague in Dresden: How parents can finally defeat the itching!
Dresden.Uproar at school: lice plague children and parents! Klara Langner can tell you a thing or two about it – she gets nervous every time the daycare center or school puts out the dreaded note. “Lice are on the way,” in her case this means that the scalps of her two daughters are in danger. In the evening the itching associated with the annoying bloodsuckers inevitably comes. Fear and terror among parents when the topic of lice comes into play!
And this is not an isolated case, as pediatrician Jakob Maske confirms: “Lice are not a question of hygiene!” Every child can be affected at some point, and the pests love close contact between the little ones, especially when playing or playing together on cell phones. The warm rooms of the cooler seasons are their perfect playground.
Lice control: This is how it becomes a beast!
Klara's first measure? The nit comb! The small nits, the egg shells of lice, are often the first signs. “I have to get rid of them quickly,” says the worried mother as she patiently untangles her daughters’ hair. This procedure can be painful, especially for her eldest daughter, who has long, curly hair. Many tears are shed before she decides on a lice treatment!
Recipes for lice remedies are sprouting up in Saxony! The numbers are increasing, reported Monika Welfens from Barmer health insurance company. Over 700 prescriptions were issued last year! But pharmacist Nadja Dörr warns: “Lice know no age difference!” So everyone who is affected must keep their heads up – parents included!
Rescue operations and costs
The costs of the treatment should not be underestimated – Klara speaks of 120 euros per treatment! It is cleaned, combed and treated again. The Robert Koch Institute recommends a second round after about nine days because the eggs hatch quickly. The sisters have to comb regularly so that the little beasts don't come back - the clock is ticking!
Watch out! Without humans, lice rarely survive for more than three days. To keep the pests away, laundry and personal items such as combs and brushes should be washed in hot water. Nobody wants to lose the fight, and Klara always has her arsenal of lice remedies at the ready. They try to get rid of the plague with a special shampoo that apparently also scares away the lice. “It’s been quieter since then,” she says with relief. But the drama surrounding the lice infestation remains. Parents should always be on guard! (with dpa)
