Reil78: A colorful refuge for creative minds and different thinkers

In Halle, in the colorful “Reil78”, a clear message is hung on the door: Police and other unwanted guests have no place here! A friendly young man named Arthur opens the gates to this unique social project, which sees itself as an open forum for creative ideas. “Everyone who has something to offer is welcome,” he explains enthusiastically. Whether film screenings, concerts or lectures – the doors are wide open for everyone who wants to get involved.

The plenum in which the events are decided is grassroots democratic and politically left-wing. There is discussion here and sometimes it takes a while until a decision is made. Robin, a long-time resident, remembers the dark times of the “baseball bat years” in the 1990s, when neo-Nazis roamed the streets. “We weren't always fast enough,” he admits, emphasizing the importance of Reil78 as a place of refuge for people who want to feel safe in a hostile environment.

For Sabrina, who comes from a “totally bourgeois family,” Reil78 is a place of freedom. Here she can develop artistically and take part in political discussions without fear of exclusion. The community promotes dialogue and being different, and the young people actively campaign against racism, sexism and anti-Semitism. “If you try something out here, you can find yourself,” says Rosa, and in fact numerous projects have already emerged from this formerly occupied house, including mobile victim support and various theater initiatives. The residents leave Reil78 not only with new skills, but also with a strengthened awareness of humanity and acceptance.
