Flood damage: helmet dike is courageously renovated!

In the district of Mansfeld-Südharz, there were considerable floods in the 2023 winter high water, but courageous decisions from the authorities retained the population in the neighboring communities in Thuringia. Excitators opened the helmet dike Katharinenrieth 294 days ago, which turned out to be the spotlight and protected the surrounding places from the water masses. Now, on October 17, 2024, the first groundbreaking ceremony was set with the reconstruction of this dike. Responsible for the two federal states of Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia led the work with a view to a DIN-friendly renovation until the end of the year.

"The stresses from the winter flood are still in the bones," said Dr. Steffen Eicher, Environmental State Secretary of Saxony-Anhalt. The dike had proven itself as a protective device, but also left traces of overload. It is of great importance to drive the repair quickly. Also Dr. Burkhard Vogel, his Thuringian counterpart, emphasized the significant cross -border cooperation that helped to avert the worst and ensure the security of the community.

joint efforts for flood protection

In addition to the two state secretaries, experts from both federal states, including Mario Suckert, President of the Thuringian State Office for the Environment, Mining and Nature Conservation, and Martina Großen-Sudhues, and director of the State Business Company for Flood Protection and Water Management Saxony-Anhalt were also present. This encounter illustrated the support and the healthy exchange that is necessary to carry out this important renovation measure. Große-Sudhues emphasized the positive, trusting cooperation that made it possible to start the work quickly.

The upcoming renovation work initially includes removing a provisional closure of sheet piling and gravel. The commissioned construction company MST Laucha will then bring in about 2,000 tons of suitable dike building material to stabilize the structure. To protect against erosion, lawn is then sown. The final step will be the restoration of the dike defense path.

In view of the progressive climate change and the associated intensification of extreme weather events, the state institutions involved have already thought about a deeper cooperation in the development of a cross -country flood protection concept. In view of the experience from the past, it is crucial to be prepared and take preventive measures to protect residents more effectively.

Background of these latest measures is the high load that the winter flood exerted on the lower reaches of the helmets. The Kelbra dam, which was influenced by excessive precipitation, had played a central role in the critical phase by contributing to regulating the amount of water. Nevertheless, the flood events in Saxony-Anhalt would result in estimated damage of 40 million euros. This sum affects several infrastructure projects that need to be repaired. The Ministry of the Environment has already provided considerable funds for the removal of the damage and to cover the follow -up costs.

The helmets itself is an essential part of the ELB system, which meanders through Saxony-Anhalt and flows into the Unstrut in Thuringia.

With the focus on the necessary measures for flood protection, everyone involved must be prepared for the future. The close cooperation between Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt ensures that both federal states will continue to be well prepared in the future to learn from the teachings of the past and to protect their citizens when nature strikes again.
