Magdeburg's mentality monster: dramatic comeback for the World Cup!

The Magdeburg handball players did it again: After a gripping semi-finals, they are in the final of the IHF Club World Cup 2024. On Sunday they were able to prevail against Al Ahly SC's hosts with 28:23, although the game was challenging from the start. The Turks put a strong start and led in the first half with 15:12.

The SC Magdeburg, who came as a defending champion, had to find himself first. After Al Aly led 7: 3 after eleven minutes, coach Bennet Wiegert was forced to take a break early. But the hosts' gifts seemed incessantly. Despite all the efforts, the SCM struggled to find the game. After 20 minutes the coach called for the second time when the gap to 11: 5 had grown.

The strong comeback of SC Magdeburg

In the further course, the German champion finally came into play. A 3-0 run, led by Albin Lagergren, Gisli Kristjansson and Manuel Zehnder, ensured new hope and reduced the deficit to 11: 8. With this feeling of resurrection, the SCM went into the cabin, even if they were still at halftime with 15:12.

In the second half, the team was determined to turn the paper. After 38 minutes the gap to 19:15 had grown, but Matthias Musche impressively showed his class. Due to a penalty throw, he equalized to 22:22. The following minutes belonged to the Magdeburg game. Musche could hardly be stopped, the gates to 22:23 and 22:24 in the 55th minute.
