New semester at the UMH: 323 medical students celebrate Dorothea Erxleben
in Halle an der Saale started the winter semester 2024/25 at the medical faculty of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, and more than 300 new students have enrolled for various health disciplines. In total there are 323 new students who start in medicine, dentistry, dentistry, evidence-based care and midwifery as well as in the master's degree in health and nursing sciences.
A special highlight of the new semester is the naming "Dorothea Erxleben-Semester". The students chose this name to honor an important personality from the history of the faculty. Dorothea Erxleben was not only the first woman in Germany in 1754 in Halle (Saale) with the support of King Friedrich the Great, but is also the namesake of the Dorothea Erxleben-Lernententrum Halle (Delh), which is of great importance for the interdisciplinary teaching. As a symbolic gesture, the faculty wants to promote the visibility of women in medicine, especially since about two thirds of the new students are women.
introductory week for freshmen
In order to make it easier for newcomers to get started, an introductory week was organized. This week is headed by the students of the second semester who have already gained some experience. The aim of this event is to network the new students together and give them a deeper insight into everyday study life. You can support support from the Student Council, which provides valuable information and assistance.
The introductory week is intended to help make first contacts and create an atmosphere of the welcome. The students have the opportunity to get to know each other better and prepare for the challenges of their studies. This commitment of the "old rabbits" is considered particularly important to facilitate the new students to get started with medical training.
The medical faculty in Halle looks back on a history of over 500 and has produced many outstanding personalities in medicine. With the choice of Dorothea Erxleben as the namesake, not only is this tradition linked, but also a sign of equality and diversity in medical training.
Further information on the current development of the study company and the activities around the Dorothea Erxleben semester are available on the website of the University Medical Center Halle.
