75 years of the Basic Law: Politologist warns students of democracy dangers!
In a gripping event at the Wendalinum high school in St. Wendel, the 75th birthday of the Basic Law was celebrated. The respected political scientist and journalist Ingo Espenschied gave an urgent lecture to the 12th grade and flished the strengths and the historical importance of the German constitution. "I don't want to live in any other country today than in our and because of our Basic Law," he explained passionately and underlined the uniqueness of this legal system.
Espenschied, invited by headmaster Alexander Besch, highlighted the history of the Basic Law and emphasized the defensive character. He made it clear that the protective measures against enemies of the constitution and the central role of the Federal Constitutional Court are decisive as the "guardian of the constitution". In times when extreme groups gain influence, he urgently warned against considering the validity of the Basic Law for granted. "All citizens have to actively contribute to the protection of democracy," he warned and called for vigilance.
an appeal to the youth
The headmaster Alexander Besch followed Espenschied's words and made an urgent appeal to the prospective high school graduates: "The freedom-democratic basic order given to us by the Basic Law is a high asset. The lecture not only offered the students an opportunity to reflect on the importance of the Basic Law, but also a clear message: they are the future keepers of democracy.
