For the first time, pay for homelessness in Saarland: alarming location!

In cooperation with the University of Technology and Economy, led by Prof. Dr. Dieter Filsinger, the Ministry of Social Affairs presented the homeless report. Minister of Social Affairs Dr. Magnus Jung described the numbers as crucial for the further development of the aid system and emphasized that it was unacceptable that so many people suffer from housing shortage - even if the rate is below the national average.

The terrifying results show that at least 543 people are affected, including 130, which are acute at home. Particularly alarming: of the 413 acute homeless people live 113 without any accommodation! The greater Saarbrücken area is particularly affected, and the most common causes are addiction problems, mental illnesses and financial emergencies. Women represent about a third of those affected - a worrying trend that the state government can no longer ignore.

a targeted plan against the crisis

In order to combat the pressing problems, the state government launched the “Round Table apartment shortage” in January 2023. The results of the research group rate the concept for the further development of housing and homeless help as promising. Minister Jung also presented a comprehensive eight-point plan that, among other things, intensify preventive measures, help vulnerable groups such as women and mentally ill people and to expand the offers of help outside the state capital.

"We have expanded the offers of help together with our partners," said Minister Jung. The Saarland is now the fifth federal state, which has commissioned a homeless report, and according to NRW the second federal state with concrete figures for homelessness. The urgency of this data cannot be emphasized enough - it is high time that is traded!
