October 2023 surprised Rhineland-Palatinate with a real mix of weather! From sun to fog to heavy rain – it was all there! A remarkable weather record shows that this October brought more precipitation and unusually high temperatures for the region!

The German Weather Service (DWD) reports that with a total of 75 liters of precipitation per square meter, the region was twelve liters above the average value for the years 1961-1990. Particularly eye-catching was October 9th, when a record-breaking 65 liters per square meter fell in Börfink-Thranenweier, which was the highest daily amount in all of Germany! The influence of the ex-Hurricane Kirk was noticeable here and gave people impressive forces of nature.

Temperature records and few hours of sunshine!

But that's not all: the temperatures this October were 11.3 degrees Celsius, more than two degrees higher than usual. Despite the warmth, the sun only appeared sporadically and was limited to just 87 hours of sunshine - that's 13 hours less than average! Fog and thick clouds had the upper hand and ensured that many days were cloudy and gray.
